Pelvic Floor Awareness
We mention the pelvic floor a great deal, but we’re aware that some people may not be totally aware of what it is, why it is important to look after it, and some ideas for helping to maintain its efficiency.
What is your Pelvic Floor?
Your pelvic floor – probably not the sexiest phrase you’ve heard all week. But wow, does it come in handy. This sheet of muscles between your pubic bone and tailbone helps with some of life’s biggies, such as bladder control and a satisfying sex life. Strong, supportive pelvic floor muscles help support not only your bladder, but your uterus and bowel.
Why look after your pelvic floor?
If you have had children or are not getting any younger, looking after your pelvic floor should be as routine as brushing your teeth. You only get one pelvic floor so let us help you look after it. If you enjoy exercise, want to trampoline with the kids or just want to have a good ol’ laugh and not wet yourself then it’s a no brainer. Your pelvic floor muscles need looking after with regular exercise and care.
What pelvic floor exercises can you do?
There are many exercises you can do to improve your pelvic floor muscles, and the best thing is that they don’t have to take lots of time or always cause a sweat. You can exercise them in the car, cooking tea or watching TV. The best way to exercise your pelvic floor is simply by tightening the muscles as if you are trying to stop a wee. The suggested way is to sit in a comfortable position, squeezing the muscles for a few seconds about 10 times in a row. It is most effective if you are relaxed, do not hold your breath or try to tighten your tummy muscles. Like any exercise, improvements will come with practise.
Your pelvic floor muscles coping with the sudden sneeze!
Your pelvic floor muscles are not just needed when it comes to vigorous exercise – you need them to be able to cope with the sudden outbursts that you are not expecting. There’s nothing worse than sneezing in a shop and realising that you have lost control! Coughing and laughing are both something we may not have control over and these can cause sudden accidents. We want our pelvic floor muscles to be able to deal with these involuntarily actions as well. So as well as doing your pelvic floor exercises slowly, try short sharp bursts holding the pelvic floor muscles for just a second at a time.
Love balls and the pelvic floor.
An additional method for improving your pelvic floor is the use of kegel balls or love balls. We offer a growing range of pelvic floor strengthening products, which we call Love Balls, such as the Nalone Yany Luxury Kegel Balls. This is an all-in-one training kit for progressive pelvic floor strengthening. The weights of the Nalone Yany Kegel Balls can be varied to match the right exercise for you.

Pelvic floor exercises for men.
The issue of a weak pelvic floor is not just confined to women – men also suffer from weak pelvic floor muscles. Factors that can weaken pelvic floor muscles in men include lack of exercise, pelvic surgery and being overweight.
Pelvic Floor in pregnancy
There can be many stresses on your body when carrying a baby. Your pelvic floor muscles are one such area. It can be affected as early as the 12 week point of pregnancy due to the strain being put on your womb and bladder. Constipation can be another issue during pregnancy, and this too can lead to pelvic floor issues. If you start looking after your pelvic floor in early pregnancy you reduce your chances of problems such as urinary incontinence and prolapse.
What to use to help with your pelvic floor
